Cameron Excavating, improving property one job at a time!
By Cindy Ladage
How often do you need a job done, but don’t have the equipment, time, or just plain know how to get it done? Renting construction equipment isn’t easy to do because it is heavy and takes a bit of operator knowledge to run it. Rather than throwing out your back, or running over your favorite shrub, hire out. Right here in Pawnee Cameron Excavating offers services to both residential and commercial customers.
Tyler Cameron is a local man growing up in Pawnee, with five plus years of experience, this young man hung out his shingle last April and just celebrated his one-year job anniversary. This demolition and exaction company began at first Tyler said, “As a business on the side for something to do. It is slowly growing.”
Tyler started in the construction business early on. “I started directional drilling and construction when I was 19 years old. For the last ten years I have gained my knowledge of operating on job sites. This is something I’ve always enjoyed doing. My first summer out of high school I worked for the Village of Pawnee, then transitioned into more of an operating field.”
When asked about the services that Cameron Excavating provides, Tyler said, “We do pretty much anything. We do rock work, driveway repairs, retaining walls, leveling dirt, hauling material, demolitions, pretty much anything! drainage problems, trenching in utilities, culvert repair.”

After that he worked with a company out of Springfield for a few years, then he struck out on his own. On their website Tyler shares, “At Cameron Excavating, we provide reliable and high-quality excavation services for both residential and commercial projects. Our expertise covers everything from dirt work and rock work to grading, hauling, drainage, trenching, and other property upgrades. With a focus on skill and dependable service, we take pride in delivering results you can trust.”
Being in a farming community, Tyler said that many of his jobs include farm work as well. He services jobs within 30 to 40 minutes of Pawnee “We cover Springfield, go to Sherman, and more.” Where they go, he added, “Just depends on the job.”
When asked about the challenges of the business, he said the hardest part has been, “Learning how to run a business has been the most challenging that is all new to me. That has probably been the most challenging, then just trying to find work and consistent work, and battling the weather. Every day there is a new obstacle that you didn’t expect or were not prepared for.”
However, Tyler is up to the rigors of the excavating business because he loves what he does, and he said that is in part because of his great customers. “You really meet a lot of people. You learn a lot through the process of doing jobs. It is always satisfying to see a project, whether driveway or yard, watch the transformation you were able to accomplish for them and help them with their problems. “
Tyler’s wife Lara manages the business side for him.” Lara does all the social media and makes sure things are running smoothly,” Tyler said. She does this along with taking care of their brand-new little girl Hattie who arrived on the scene a scant two months ago. From Virden, Lara is also a central Illinois girl.
The Cameron’s feel blessed by the support they have got from the local community. “We love the support of our local small town. Family and people have needed work done and supported our business.”
